Summer 2018 Newsletter

The RTOW spring meeting was held on Saturday March 3rd at the Metropolis Resort in Eau Claire.
It was a fantastic meeting with excellent speakers. All who attended were very pleased with what the meeting offered for CE and professional networking. Thank you to Angela Quick and others at Sacred Heart Radiation Oncology that worked so hard to plan a successful meeting!

Fall 2018 Meeting

The spring meeting will be Saturday November10, 2018 at the UW Hospital in Madison. Stay tuned for emails and website postings with more information about times, speakers and hotel reservations. 

UW-La Crosse Updates:

UW-L Radiation Therapy Program report, Melissa Weege:

 Thank you to RTOW for their support of radiation therapy education, the student achievement award and essay competition. Also huge thanks to those who provide opportunities for students to observe prior to application, complete externships or provide clinical instruction on a regular basis.

Program updates                                                 

 1.       Finished up with admission interviews and will be notifying students for class of 2020.

2.       JECERT accreditation will be happening this coming Thursday and Friday; this will allow the program to be accredited for another 8 years.
3.       Erin Basler has been accepted as the Wisconsin student representative for the ASRT student leadership conference this summer.
4.       The class of 2019 is looking to join therapists at the ASRT in San Antonio; they are fundraising for this to happen.  Please reach out to Melissa or Amanda and they can connect you with a student selling bake-ware.
5.       Continue to have 100% pass rate on the boards with an 89.5 average which puts the program in the top 95% for the United States.
6.       ASRT curriculum is being updated, the Principle and Practice Book is also being updated.
7.       The year 2019 marks the 20th year for the LaCrosse RT program.  There will be a 20 year Alumni Reunion in conjunction with the 2019 Spring RTOW meeting to be held in LaCrosse
 

UW-L Class of 2018 report:

  Graduation in 5 months, Working on Resumes, job searching, finishing up externships and student papers.

 

UW-L RT Club and Class of 2019 report:

 Receiving good reviews at clinic sites; very active in RT club, helping with mock interviews for new applicants; Internship placement notices went out.

North West Update:  

Acension St Michael's: In the middle of large project to implement Cerner One Chart with an oncology module, Go –live is slotted for October for both radiation and medical oncology along with all of the hospital. Radiation Oncology department is also going to be changing to Aria and Eclipse from MOSAIQ and Pinnacle.  The radiation oncology department upgraded their Align RT System to the newest version with HD cameras. They also performed their first frame-less SRS on the True-Beam utilizing a mask and Align RT.  Looking for a physicist FTE as well.

Aspirus: 

Aspirus 14th Annual Oncology Conference is scheduled for April 21, 2018.  This offers ARRT credits.

Essentia Health: Essentia Health in Ashland upgraded to the newest version of Aria and is looking for a 0.6 FTE to split at both the Ashland and Duluth facilities.

North East Update:

Central WI Cancer Program/St. Agnes – Fon du Lac: As of January 1st, Agnesian Health Care has joined SSM Health and is in process of renaming/rebranding.  Dosimetry received the latest Pinnacle update of 16.02

Bay Area Cancer Center- Marinette:   Putting finishing touches on RadOnc department layout at the new Bay Area Medical Center, which will be opening in August. The new department will be equipped with a TrueBeam and large bore Toshiba CT simulator. Therapists are looking forward to moving into the new building this summer.

Southeast Region Update:

Froedtert & MCW: The Drexel Center is officially open. They have a new Elekta machine and Siemens CT. Working there are 3 therapists 3 MDs and 1 dosimetrist. They noted that they have all the same beam models so can easily transfer patients to their other sites if necessary. Finally they are looking forward to extend services to the southern counties.

Columbia St. Mary’s:  Columbia St. Mary's will be installing a new TrueBeam linear accelerator this summer  CSM is also receiving a new GE wide boar simulator at the Ozaukee Campus, which therapists are very excited for!    Finally, next Saturday Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology from CSM will be teaming up with the American Lung Cancer Society to raise support by participating in the Fight for Air Climb at the US bank building in Milwaukee. This entails climbing 47 floors of stairs all the way to the top of the US bank building!

Southwest Region Update:

No updates

New Board Member Nominations: 

Sophia Lamey was nominated as a Southwest representative, Catlin Maki was nominated at the Southeast representative, and Mindy Kren was nominated for the secretary position.  Voting will take place at the fall meeting and their terms will begin then.   Thank you all for stepping up into these roles!
